A hit and run is an auto accident wherein one of the parties leaves the scene before exchanging or providing contact information with the other driver or person involved in the accident. This would apply only to accidents which result in injury or property damage. Hit and run, or leaving the scene of an accident, is a serious criminal offense in Southern California. This may be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony, depending upon the amount of damage or injury caused.

Hit and Run – Property Damage

Per California Vehicle Code, if a driver is involved in an accident which causes property damage, he or she must exchange contact information with the owner of the property. If the property owner cannot be located, the driver must leave a note with information regarding the accident and his or her information. The driver must also contact the CHP (California Highway Patrol) or local police to report the incident.

Hit and Run Causing Injury or Death

When an auto accident results in injury or death, the driver must stay on the scene and provide reasonable assistance to the injured person or persons, such as calling 911 and getting an ambulance on the scene. This would need to be done in addition to reporting the accident to law enforcement and exchanging contact information with the other party or parties involved.
